CHARACTER RELATIONSHIP ANALYSIS: Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark
In the beginning of the series, we see Katniss as a young, strong, determined girl who does not have any interest in almost anything other than her sister. When she competes in the Hunger Games, she meets Peeta who truly loves her. He and Katniss took care of each other in the arena, and before it was announced they were both victors, he was willing to let her kill him at the end of the Games so that she may live. Through the second book we begin to understand Katniss’s feelings for Peeta. Though Katniss admits that those feelings are complicated by circumstances beyond their control and her friendship with Gale, she continuously leans on him for support. Gale tells her it would be easier to hate Peeta if he wasn’t such a nice person. Peeta’s willingness to die for her in the arena so that she may live demonstrates his love, selflessness, and innate goodness. Katniss is determined to die for Peeta because she owes him that and she hopes that his pain at her death will fuel his ability to be outspoken and run the Rebellion. After Peeta is abducted by the Capitol, Katniss reacts with a frenzy, ending the second book. During the third installment, we witness the tension between Gale and Peeta. When Peeta returns from the Capitol he has been brainwashed or “hijacked” and no longer remembers his love for Katniss. Katniss is broken and almost ready to give up. While his conditions remains static, her attitude towards him grows more cruel and unjustified. Haymitch notices this and tells her that if she was going through what Peeta was going through, he would’ve worked his hardest to bring her back. Upon hearing this, Katniss tries a little harder. There’s a scene where she tells him all the things she knows and misses about him, which is a big point of the book in which we understand how much Katniss truly loves Peeta. When the Rebellion succeeds, Katniss returns to District 12 and builds a relationship with Peeta that is described for only a few paragraphs in the book. She ultimately chooses to stay with Peeta for reasons told in the following quote:“What I need to survive is not Gale’s fire kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again and only Peeta can give me that.So after when he whispers, “You love me. Real or not real?”I tell him, “Real”
